Lake Tovel

Lake Tovel is located in Trentino, at 1,178 m above sea level, on the orographic right side of Val Di Non Valley, nestled between the peaks of the Brenta Dolomites,  and the Alpine massif among the valleys of Di Non, Adige, Giudicarie, Rendena, Campiglio, Meledrio and Sole. Known all over the world for the exceptional phenomenon of the reddening of its waters (ceased after 1964), Lake Tovel has long remained in the spotlight for researchers and naturalists. It represents one of the most studied lakes among those in the Alpine region. Documentary sources and natural findings regarding this characteristic aquatic mirror, preserved in the Historical Archive of the Water Research Institute (IRSA) of the Italian National Research Council, compared and integrated with numerous sources kept in many scientific and cultural institutions of Trentino, have led to the reconstruction of an important period of Italian scientific history, starting from the early studies of Edgardo Baldi in 1938 and Livia Pirocchi, until the latest SALTO research project. Since the beginnings of the Twentieth century the research has never stopped. In the Website, a selection of the main archival sources and sedimentary records which led to reconstruction of the history related to lake Tovel is proposed. Lake Tovel is a Long Term Ecological Research (LTER Italy) site (IT09-005-A), part of the greater European association (eLTER).
